Pots in the Parterre 2025

Wayne Clark

Wayne Clark – Ceramic Artist, Educator & Event Organizer

Wayne is based in Prestatyn on the North Wales coast, where he operates his own studio and wood kiln. His journey in ceramics began with studies in Design Crafts at the North Wales School of Art, Wrexham (Wrexham University), followed by a degree in Workshop Ceramics at Harrow School of Art (University of Westminster, London)graduating 1995.

His first major break came when he was invited by the Paul Rice Gallery on Ladbroke Road, London, to take part in the prestigious British Studio Ceramics exhibition. Since then, Wayne has exhibited widely, participating in ceramic shows and exhibitions across the UK and internationally.

Wayne works with clay intuitively, blending throwing and handbuilding techniques to create pieces that are both functional and sculptural. His larger works feature bold gestural marks and almost patchwork-like structures, while his smaller functional pieces carry a refined, controlled craftsmanship.

A passionate advocate of woodfiring, Wayne built his own wood kiln, firing his work to temperatures exceeding 1300°C. He carefully selects clays, slips, and additives that interact beautifully with the unpredictable nature of the woodfiring process, resulting in rich surfaces and unique finishes. His involvement in Pots in the Parterre has given him the opportunity to be even more experimental, pushing the scale of his work beyond the norm while exploring new glaze and firing techniques.

Alongside his studio practice, Wayne is a Senior Demonstrator at Wrexham School of Art, where he teaches on the BA (Hons) Applied Arts program. He is also a key figure in the UK ceramics community, co-founding the prestigious Ceramic Wales event in 2016 with his wife, Jo, and fellow ceramicist Wendy Lawrence.

In addition to his individual work, Wayne has collaborated on various projects, including work with the Royal Institute of British Architects, exploring the relationship between ceramics and architecture.

Through his work as an artist, educator, and event organizer, Wayne continues to push the boundaries of ceramic artistry and fostering creativity within the field.
