Stephanie Carlton Artist Statement:
I am an artist specialising in ceramics, printmaking, and painting on paper, disciplines through which I examine the interplay of contrasts—such as light and shadow, form and texture, stillness and movement. My works are presented either as individual pieces or assembled into series that evoke expansive landscapes. My ceramics practice includes wheel-throwing porcelain and stoneware, alongside hand-building and casting techniques using porcelain. Through the application of wax resist, expressive mark making, and layering surfaces with stains and oxides, I construct abstracted fragments reminiscent of landscapes and natural patterns. Central to my work is an exploration of nature’s impermanence. While mountains and geological formations are often perceived as immutable, they are undergoing significant transformations due to climatic shifts, particularly in permafrost and glacial regions. These themes are informed by my experiences travelling through mountainous terrains, mapping journeys, and observing natural structures and layers. The sculptural elements investigate transitions of form and light, juxtaposing the fluidity of delicate, thin porcelain with rocks and reflected silhouettes. Printmaking techniques are employed to create textures and tonalities on the porcelain, and paper components are incorporated and fired within the forms, leaving subtle traces behind. Collectively, these pieces symbolise the evolving character of both the earth-derived materials and the mountains themselves
